Somewhere down the road to good intentions There are too many heartaches to mention You had them all, oh you never learn You flirt with disaster; you always get burned Time after time of laying it on the line Why don't you look 'em in the eyes Time after time of saying it'll be fine Don't tell them any lies Sometimes you start off with arms wide open Sometimes you wish for a kind word spoken Sometimes you don't know what to believe And you only see what you want to see CHORUS When you're feeling down and all alone You can't get a friend on the phone The best you can do is to trust your heart Call on me when you're falling apart

about

Lori's bright new album "Matador" is a rich tapestry of songs highlighting her prowess as a master songwriter and passionate singer is receiving rave reviews:

"Lori Yates’ Matador sparkles with seductive grooves, wonderfully inventive melodies
and finely crafted, emotive-filled vocals. Matador is, so far, my favourite album of the year."
- Rob Bowman, Grammy-winning Professor of Music, Feb. 2024

Her voice is like liquid honey, cracks in all the right places and can still kick your ass with its strength and conviction. Her songs wrap around you like your favourite sweater.

The first single, "Alive," deals with life's duality.
Uplifting, transformative, and wise.
"It's good to be alive, even if it hurts to be alive."

Lori veers into a more sparse acoustic sound on this recording. Accompanied by organ/keyboardist Steve O'Connor (Jim Cuddy) and mandolin, banjo Jimmy Bowskill (Blue Rodeo).
Longtime band mates Hey Stella plays on three tracks including a reworking of "Time After Time" her 1989 Sony co-write with Guy Clark. This is the last recording of longtime friend and band mate David Baxter.

Recorded at the famed Woodshed Studio, Toronto and co-produced by Yates and Tim Vesely of the Rheostatics.

The title track, "Matador," is an autobiographical homage to the famed Toronto after-hours club and a call to arms against the gentrification of significant landmarks.

Juno nominated Yates, a veteran of the Canadian music scene who spent the last 20 years in Hamilton, Ontario with her family, where she moved to raise her son. She was a beloved member of the music community. Her lyrics were permanently enshrined in the town square along with: Robbie Robertson, Stan Rogers, Daniel Lanois, and The Arkells. She moved back to Toronto in spring of 2023.

"Matador" demands to be heard, a timeless ritual akin to leafing through chapters of a cherished novel. It harkens back to a time when albums were immersive experiences.
